Dubs is old Yorkshire dialect meaning deep pool. Our sauna is placed next a deep pool in our beck (small river) called Garden Dubs which runs through the intimate glacial valley.

The sauna sits on four large boulders found in the beck . A felled tree provided the rain gutter and we milled yew from our land to make the walkway down to the dubs.

We like to use locally sourced, natural materials to make our lodges feel as if they have been there forever.

The Dubs’ sauna roof is made from corten – corrugated steel which rusts to an orange matching the hues of the surrounding bracken. Inside the sauna is heated with a HUUM wood-red stove creating a beautiful amber glow as you sit watching the sun set. Inside the ceiling is clad with white aspen and two simple benches are made from red cedar.

As I sit writing this blog the dales weather is beating at the window. It’s an ideal time to re up the sauna and retreat into the heat. When I’ve had enough it’s back outside to face the elements as rain beats down I submerge into the dubs’ cold water for 1, 2 or 3 minutes. My skin starts to burn with the heat of the cold and my head starts to lighten so I step out, back into the sauna to start the process all over again.

Heat, sweat, cold. Heat, sweat, cold.

It’s the ultimate Shokk&Awe experience. If you are interested in having your own sauna built and would like to visit the Dub’s sauna in the Yorkshire dales please get in touch with Charles or Tom.
